Makeup With A Purpose..
Sexual assault survivors in South Africa will now have greater access to medical, legal, and psychological services through the Thuthuzela Care Centres (TCC’s) network thanks to MAC Cosmetics and the U.S. Department of State.
On June 2nd, Secretary of State, Hillary Clinton and the MAC Aids Fund announced their $2 million commitment for the next two years to expand the TCC network’s services with the launch of new TCC centers and extending the hours of business for existing clinics.
The MAC AIDS Fund partnered with the Office of the Global Women’s Issues at the Department of State, the USAID Regional Mission in South Africa, and the South African Government’s National Prosecuting Agency/Sexual Offensives and Community Affairs Unit (NPA/SOCA) to make these dire-needed resources for victims of sexual assault a reality.
Why is it important for us as women to support this initiative? Well, as a group women make up 29 percent of the total 5.6 million people living with HIV/AIDS in South Africa according to UNAIDS in 2010. Survivors of sexual violence are at high risk of contracting HIV/AIDS because of the diseases prevalent in South Africa and the fact that most abusers don’t use protection. And as expected, women would be at a higher risk of experiencing sex crimes against them, leaving them more susceptible to HIV/AIDS.
100% of the proceeds of MAC’s Viva Glam collection, modeled by Lady Gaga, benefit the MAC AIDS fund and their fight against HIV/AIDS. Since our sexual health is as important as looking pretty, buying makeup is an easy way to give back.
This is such an important cause that too many people ignore or are unaware of..
